Did you know that the Chicago White Sox weren't always called "White Sox?" In 1901, a baseball team was born, and they were named the White Stockings. Years later, after stockings were no longer in fashion, they changed their name to White Sox.
Can you imagine rooting for the White Stockings? Cheers probably won't roll off the tongue quite as easily as "White Sox."

Adding to the cool history lesson, actually BOTH Chicago baseball teams were once the White Stockings.

Chicago's first professional club, established 1870, played in the National Association for the 1871 season, resumed play in 1874-75 after the Great Chicago Fire, and joined (actually initiated) the National League in 1876. Called the White Stockings through 1889, it is now the Chicago Cubs.
The American League team now known as Chicago White Sox entered Chicago in 1900 and adopted the old name of its crosstown competitor.
